Sam Saulwick has been instrumental in shaping The Bread Social, the much-loved bakery born in Byron Bay and now spanning the Northern Rivers and Gold Coast.

Sam grew up in Byron Bay in a family deeply connected to the region’s food and hospitality scene. His parents ran the Beach Café from the mid-1980s and later Oriental Express, giving him a front-row seat to a formative era in Byron’s food culture and a grounding in hospitality from an early age.

After spending time working in Sydney’s bakery scene, Sam returned to the Northern Rivers and, alongside Tom Scott and Paul Giddings, established The Bread Social in 2015.

What began as a small artisan bakery at The Farm Byron Bay has grown into one of the region’s most recognised names in food, built around Australian produce, local provenance, good food and strong community.

For Sam, hospitality has always been about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about people, place and creating something that contributes meaningfully to the communities it calls home.
